Khlong Lat Mayom & Taling Chan Local Floating Markets Tour

4.3 (14 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Sightseeingbangkok.com's private half-day tour visits two local weekend markets in Bangkok's Taling Chan district, Khlong Lat Mayom and Taling Chan. A guide collects you from your hotel in central Bangkok, or meets you at the operator's Central World office, and the whole trip takes about four hours in an air-conditioned vehicle.

Both markets are mainly about food. Thai families come for grilled fish, noodles, Thai desserts and seasonal fruit grown in the gardens along the canals, and the setting is a quiet canal community a short drive from the city centre. Most stalls are on land beside the water, with a smaller floating section, so this is a local eating outing and not a canal packed with boat vendors.

It suits travellers who have already seen the main sights, want a short morning out, and would like a guide to explain the dishes. Reviewers who knew Thai food enjoyed it most; one first-timer felt it was mostly walking through the market, since tastings are not included. A canal boat ride is not in the inclusions either, though boats from the piers are cheap if you want one.

The markets trade on weekends and public holidays, so this is a Saturday, Sunday or holiday tour. The rating of 4.3 comes from only 14 reviews, a small sample. The guide can work in English, German, Spanish, French or Russian, but languages other than English need 48 hours' notice.

What Travelers Say

The first market you visit is about 45 mins from Bangkok. It is a very large market which is floating in that it is partly on a pontoon next to a canal, but it is not a floating market where you are on a boat and so are the sellers. It is very busy with

Great tour that gets you out of the city a bit. Had a good time and would recommend. Large part of what made my tour good was “sunny” the guide who spoke great English and was funny, smart, knowledgeable and personable. I saw monitor lizards too!

This is a very good tour if you have already toured Bangkok and know the local foods. if this is your first tour in bangkok, you will be a bit disappointed as it will feel just as you are only going through the market... with no tastings and you will h

Frequently Asked Questions

Which days does the Khlong Lat Mayom and Taling Chan tour run?

Both markets trade on weekends and public holidays, so book a Saturday, Sunday or holiday. On a weekday most stalls are closed. Khlong Lat Mayom's best food window is roughly 10:00 to 13:00, and Taling Chan's seating fills with local families from late morning.

Is Khlong Lat Mayom a real floating market?

Partly. Most stalls are on land beside the canal, and a smaller section sells from boats or pontoons on the water. It is a local food market, popular with Thai weekend diners and less touristy than Damnoen Saduak, so expect eating more than a canal crowded with boat vendors.

Is food included on this tour?

No. The inclusions are a guide, an air-conditioned vehicle, round-trip transfer and an admission fee. Food and drinks at the markets are paid for yourself, and many stalls take cash only. Prices are local and low, so a few hundred baht goes a long way.

Does the tour include a boat ride?

A boat ride is not listed in the inclusions, although some reviewers took one. Boats leave from the market piers and are reported at about 60–100 baht per person for a longer canal loop. Ask your guide if there is time, and agree the price and duration before you board.

Is hotel pickup included?

Free door-to-door pickup is offered within about 3 km of central Bangkok. If your hotel is further out, you can meet at the operator's office on Level 29 of The Offices at Central World on Rama I Road. Confirm your hotel address with the operator after booking.

How much does this private market tour cost?

It starts from $98 per person. The listing's price tiers show that the per-person price changes with the number of travellers, and a solo traveller pays noticeably more. Gratuities and market food are extra, and free cancellation applies under Viator's standard policy.
