Bangkok: Damnoen Saduak Market and Maeklong Railway Market

4.6 (29,487 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is the classic morning run from Bangkok to two markets southwest of the city: Maeklong Railway Market, where a working seafood and produce market sits on an active line, and Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, where vendors sell from boats on the canals. Bigcountry has run it for years, and it carries 29,331 reviews at 4.6, from $24 per person.

The drive takes about 1.5 hours. At Maeklong you get around 1.5 hours with the guide and on your own, timed so you can stand by the tracks as vendors pull back their awnings and the train creeps through. The listing's itinerary also mentions a short train ride, but the inclusions do not, so plan on watching and treat a ride as a bonus. Damnoen Saduak comes next: you arrive on a paddle boat, which is included, then have about 1.5 hours to walk the canal-side lanes and eat.

You choose how you start. Hotel pickup at 5:50am gets you back around 1:30pm and reaches Damnoen in the busier early window; later pickups and the River City meeting point at 6:30am, 9:00am or 10:30am return in the afternoon. A small-group option caps the group at 12, and a premium upgrade uses a 9-seat vehicle with hotel pickup and drop-off.

It suits first-time visitors who want both markets in one morning at a low price. Damnoen Saduak is touristy and the souvenir and snack prices are high, which some guests mention, and the boat portion is short. Damnoen and Maeklong were flood-affected in October 2026, so check current conditions with the operator before you go.

Pui was an amazing tour guide! We booked the first slot in the morning and although the pick up time is a bit early it was totally worth it. We actually got into the train to the Maeklong Railway Market, which was an incredible experience to see it from inside! Then we went to the floating market and it was very nice and with plenty of time to see everything (and have some nice lunch!) Pui was super funny and she gave us plenty of good tips, like which market was cheaper to buy and the scams that we had to avoid. Fully recommend and hopefully you have the same tour guide!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you ride the Maeklong train on this tour?

Plan on watching it. You stand by the tracks as vendors pull back their awnings and the train passes. The itinerary mentions a short train ride at Maeklong, but the list of inclusions does not, and it depends on the timetable. If riding the train matters to you, ask the operator before booking.

Is the boat ride at Damnoen Saduak included?

Yes. A paddle boat ride into Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is included, so you do not need to negotiate a boat at the pier. It is a slow rowing boat, not a long-tail motorboat, and some guests found it short. You can usually pay locally for a longer ride if you want more time on the water.

What time does the tour start and when do you get back?

It depends on the option. Hotel pickup at 5:50am returns around 1:30pm, and 8:00am or 9:00am pickups return around 3:30–4:00pm. From the River City meeting point, 6:30am returns around 1:30pm, 9:00am around 3:30–4:00pm and 10:30am around 5:00pm. Earlier starts reach Damnoen in its busier morning window.

Is lunch included?

No. Lunch is excluded, but you get free time at both markets to buy food, and the listing suggests pad thai, rice noodle soup or mango sticky rice. Bring cash in baht, since many stalls take cash only. Prices at Damnoen Saduak are aimed at visitors, so check the price before you order.

Is Damnoen Saduak too touristy?

It is touristy. Most boats sell souvenirs and snacks to visitors, and prices are high, which several guests mention. What you get is the look of a boat market and an easy morning out. If you want a local food market, Amphawa or the weekend markets in Bangkok suit better.

Are the markets affected by the October 2026 floods?

Damnoen Saduak and the Maeklong area were among the districts affected by flooding in October 2026, and some vendors stopped trading for a time. Conditions change week to week, so check with the operator before you travel. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before the start.
