A One-Day Floating Market Itinerary

Three timed floating market itineraries from Bangkok: Damnoen Saduak and Maeklong by early afternoon, a weekend Amphawa evening, and a Bangkok-only morning.

Updated October 2026

The best one-day floating market itinerary depends on the day of the week. Damnoen Saduak runs every morning, so the classic plan is an early start, the boats, Maeklong Railway Market 20 to 30 minutes away, and back in Bangkok by early afternoon. On Friday to Sunday you can swap that for an afternoon and evening at Amphawa with a firefly boat. On a weekend morning without a long drive, Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom are inside Bangkok. The three timed plans below use hedged times, so check train times and your tour’s schedule before you go. The floating market tours homepage lists every tour.

The three plans at a glance

Pick by the day you have. Plan A, Damnoen Saduak and Maeklong, works on any morning of the week. Plan B, Maeklong, Amphawa and a firefly boat, works only from Friday to Sunday. Plan C, Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom, works only on weekend and public holiday mornings. Every time below is approximate.

Plan A: Damnoen Saduak and Maeklong, back by early afternoon

This is the classic morning, and it runs any day of the week. Damnoen Saduak is about 80 to 100 km southwest of Bangkok, usually 1.5 to 2 hours by road, and is best from about 7 to 9am. Going to the boats first gets you there at the quietest time, then you catch Maeklong’s late-morning train.

Time (approximate)What happens
06:00Leave central Bangkok by car
07:30–09:30Damnoen Saduak: a paddle boat or long-tail through the side canals, then the market on foot
09:30–10:00Drive 20–30 minutes to Maeklong
10:00–11:30Maeklong Railway Market: browse the seafood and fresh-food stalls, then watch the late-morning train (arrivals around 11:10, departures around 11:30)
11:30–13:30Drive back to Bangkok, lunch on the way or in the city

The train times are approximate: four trains arrive and four depart each day, roughly morning, late morning, mid-afternoon and early evening, so check the current SRT timetable and move the Maeklong slot to fit. A private car or private tour lets you run the day in this order. The Private Tour to Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak (from $117 per person, 5.0 from 249 reviews) includes hotel pickup, a private motorboat and an optional train ride before Maeklong; read our review.

The shared tours run the same morning in the other order, Maeklong first. The Damnoen Saduak Market and Maeklong Railway Market tour picks up at 5:50am, gives about 1.5 hours at each market and is back around 1:30pm. The 6:30am departure of the Floating Market and Train Market Experience rides the train into Maeklong and is back around 1:45 to 2:30pm.

Other Experiences

Other experiences you might enjoy

Each plan has a matching tour: Damnoen Saduak and Maeklong mornings, weekend Amphawa evenings with fireflies, and Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom weekend markets.

Plan B: Weekend afternoon at Maeklong, Amphawa and the fireflies

Amphawa runs only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from mid-afternoon into the evening, so this plan starts late and ends after dark. It suits people who would rather eat than shop and do not want a 5am alarm.

Time (approximate)What happens
12:30Leave Bangkok, about 1.5 hours to Maeklong
14:00–15:30Maeklong Railway Market: the mid-afternoon train (arrivals around 14:30, departures around 15:30)
16:00–17:00Wat Bang Kung, the ordination hall wrapped in banyan roots
17:00–19:00Amphawa: grilled seafood from boats, boat noodles and Thai desserts along the canal
19:00–20:30Firefly boat on the canals and river after dark
20:30–22:00Drive back to Bangkok

The tours follow this shape closely. The Maeklong Railway & Amphawa Floating Market Day Trip lists about 1.5 hours at Maeklong, 1 hour at Wat Bang Kung, 2 hours at Amphawa and 1.5 hours on the river boat, runs Friday to Sunday only and lasts 8.5 to 11.5 hours.

Fireflies are best in the rainy months and never guaranteed. Amphawa is a canal-side market, so expect food stalls along the water more than a crowd of vendor boats. The Amphawa floating market tours page compares the options.

Plan C: A Bangkok-only weekend morning

Taling Chan and Khlong Lat Mayom are weekend and public-holiday food markets in western Bangkok, about 4 km apart, and easy to combine without leaving the city. Most stalls are on land with a smaller floating section.

Time (approximate)What happens
08:00–09:30Taling Chan, about 12 km from downtown: breakfast from the boat kitchens before the seats fill with locals
09:45–12:45Option 1: the three-market boat trip from Taling Chan pier (Taling Chan, Wat Saphan, Khlong Lat Mayom), about 3 hours and about 99 baht
10:00–13:00Option 2: a short taxi ride to Khlong Lat Mayom, at its best for food from about 10:00 to 13:00, plus a canal boat for about 60–100 baht
13:00–14:00Taxi back to central Bangkok

Bring cash, since many stalls take no cards. To go guided, the Khlong Lat Mayom & Taling Chan Local Floating Markets Tour covers both in about 4 hours from $98 per person, and the Full Day Longtail Boat Canal Tour reaches Khlong Lat Mayom by teak boat from $85 per person. The local floating market tours page has more.
