Damnoen Saduak vs Amphawa

Damnoen Saduak vs Amphawa floating market: morning boat market or weekend evening food market. Crowds, food, boats, fireflies, distance and the tours for each.

Updated October 2026

Choose Damnoen Saduak if you want the classic picture of vendors selling from boats and can only go on a weekday morning; choose Amphawa if you are free on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday afternoon and care more about canal-side food, a Thai crowd and an evening firefly boat. Damnoen Saduak is the more touristy of the two, with souvenir stalls and a 7–9am peak. Amphawa is a food market on the canal banks that comes alive from mid-afternoon. Both are about 1.5–2 hours’ drive from Bangkok, and both pair naturally with the Maeklong Railway Market. Our floating market tours cover each.

Other Experiences

Other experiences you might enjoy

Damnoen Saduak runs as a morning tour with the Maeklong Railway Market, Amphawa as a weekend evening tour with fireflies, and a private charter can link the two.

Damnoen Saduak: the boat market, and the crowds that come with it

Damnoen Saduak is the market most people mean when they say “the floating market”. Vendors in wooden boats sell fruit, snacks and souvenirs along the canals, and you see it best from a boat yourself. It is also touristy, and it helps to know that before you go. Much of what the boats sell is aimed at package tourists, many stalls carry the same items, and guests on the big tours mention steep prices for snacks and crowded canals. It opens daily, which is its great advantage, and it is busiest and best from about 7 to 9am. By late morning it is thinning out.

The boat is the main event. A paddle boat is slow and quiet and weaves between the stalls; a long-tail motorboat covers more canal at speed, and many rides combine the two. Boat prices are set by each pier or operator and are often negotiated, so agree the price, the duration and whether it is per person or per boat before boarding. Most day tours include one. The Damnoen Saduak guide has the full picture.

Amphawa: the food market that wakes up in the afternoon

Amphawa is a different kind of trip. It is a canal-side market where the stalls line the banks, and even the TripGuru tour listing says there are only a few vendor boats. The draw is food: grilled seafood cooked on boats moored at the steps, boat noodles, Thai desserts and barbecue stalls after dark. It is mostly visited by Thais, and it feels less staged than Damnoen Saduak.

It only runs Friday to Sunday, from mid-afternoon into the evening, with Saturday the busiest. After dark, boats take visitors along the canals and the Mae Klong River to look for fireflies. They are best in the rainy months, roughly May or June to October, on moonless nights, and they are never guaranteed. Shared firefly boats are reported at about 60–80 baht per person. The Amphawa guide goes deeper.

Which tours go where

Tours split cleanly into morning Damnoen trips and afternoon-to-evening Amphawa trips. Nearly all of them add the Maeklong Railway Market, which sits between the two: 20–30 minutes’ drive from Damnoen Saduak and about 7 km from Amphawa.

Doing both: one long day or two separate trips

You can see both, as long as one of your days falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

The two-day plan is the easy one. Take a morning Damnoen Saduak and Maeklong tour on any day, then an Amphawa evening tour on a weekend day. Each day is a normal tour length, and you get each market at its best hour.

The one-day plan needs a car. The Bangkok: Floating & Maeklong Markets Tour by Private Charter is a car and driver that follows your schedule, with Damnoen Saduak, Maeklong and Amphawa among its suggested stops and a canal boat transfer to Damnoen Saduak included. It is priced per car, from $138 for an 8-hour sedan for up to 3 people (October 2026); bigger vehicles and the 10- and 12-hour options cost more. An 8-hour day starting at 7am ends mid-afternoon, just as Amphawa gets going, so for Damnoen at 8am and Amphawa at dusk you need the longer hire. Departures run from 7am to 10am, the driver speaks basic English, and a guide is an optional add-on. It has free cancellation and a 4.5 rating from 79 reviews; see our review. The private floating market tours page lists the guided private options.

Floods affected Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa and Maeklong in October 2026, so check current conditions with your operator before you travel.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa?

Damnoen Saduak is better for the boat-market scene and for weekday mornings. Amphawa is better for food, a mostly Thai crowd and an evening atmosphere, but it only opens Friday to Sunday.

Is Damnoen Saduak too touristy?

It is touristy, with souvenir stalls and tour groups, and prices for snacks can be high. Go at 7–9am, take a boat through the quieter side canals, and you will see the best of it.

Can you visit Damnoen Saduak and Amphawa on the same day?

Yes, on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, with a private car hired for 10 to 12 hours: Damnoen Saduak in the morning, Maeklong at midday, Amphawa from mid-afternoon.

Are there boats at Amphawa floating market?

Some vendors cook from boats along the canal, and evening firefly boats run from the market. Most stalls are on the banks.

Is Khlong Lat Mayom a better choice than Damnoen Saduak?

For a local food market close to the city, yes. Khlong Lat Mayom opens on weekends and holidays and is mostly on land. See our Khlong Lat Mayom guide.
