Best Time to Visit the Floating Markets

Best time to visit Bangkok's floating markets by hour, day and season: Damnoen Saduak at 7–9am, Amphawa on weekend evenings, fireflies, floods, Songkran.

Updated October 2026

The best time to visit a Bangkok floating market depends on which market you mean: Damnoen Saduak is best at about 7–9am on any day of the week, Amphawa from mid-afternoon into the evening on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and the local Bangkok markets such as Khlong Lat Mayom and Taling Chan in the late morning on a weekend. Season matters less than the hour, though the rainy months bring fireflies at Amphawa and the late rainy season can bring flooding. Pick your market first on the floating market tours page, then use this guide to time it.

The best time of day at each market

Every floating market near Bangkok keeps its own hours, and arriving at the wrong one is the most common way to be disappointed.

MarketBest time of dayWhy
Damnoen SaduakAbout 7–9amThe busiest trading hours, ahead of the larger tour groups; quiet by late morning or early afternoon
Maeklong Railway MarketWhen a train is dueFour trains arrive and four depart each day, roughly morning, late morning, mid-afternoon and early evening
AmphawaMid-afternoon to eveningThe tourism authority gives 3–8pm as the best time; fireflies after dark
Khlong Lat MayomAbout 10am–1pmThe best window for the food stalls
Taling ChanBefore about 11amSeating fills with local diners after that
Bang Nam PhuengMid-morning to lunchtimeOpens about 8am; may close as early as 2pm

Damnoen Saduak rewards an early start. It is a morning market, and by late morning the boats thin out and many vendors wind down. This is why the morning tours leave Bangkok so early: the Bangkok: Floating Market and Train Market Experience lists departures at 6:30 and 8:30, and most other tours have similar times.

Amphawa works the other way. Shops start opening around midday, but the market fills from mid-afternoon and runs into the evening, with grilled seafood and barbecue stalls after dark. If you arrive early in the morning instead, you may see monks making their alms rounds by boat, but the market itself will not be trading.

Other Experiences

Other experiences you might enjoy

Early-start tours reach Damnoen Saduak and the Maeklong Railway Market in the morning, while Amphawa tours leave Bangkok after lunch on Fridays to Sundays.

The best day of the week

Day of the week matters more than most visitors expect, because only Damnoen Saduak and the Maeklong Railway Market open every day. The others keep weekend hours.

  • Monday to Thursday: Damnoen Saduak and the Maeklong Railway Market are open. Amphawa, Khlong Lat Mayom, Taling Chan and Bang Nam Phueng are closed.
  • Friday: Amphawa opens for the weekend, from the afternoon.
  • Saturday and Sunday: everything is open. Amphawa is busiest on Saturday.
  • Thai public holidays: the weekend markets usually open too.

That makes Damnoen Saduak the answer for a weekday floating market. One caution: guests on a Monday tour mention fewer vendor boats than they expected, so arrive at the early end of the window. On a weekend you have the full choice, and our opening days and hours guide sets out every market day by day.

The best season

Thailand’s Meteorological Department divides the year into three seasons. The markets run all year, so season shapes the experience, not whether you can go.

SeasonMonthsWhat it means for the markets
Hot seasonMid-February to mid-MayEarly starts help; Songkran falls in mid-April
Rainy seasonMid-May to mid-OctoberBest months for fireflies at Amphawa; flood risk late in the season
Cool seasonMid-October to mid-FebruaryThe start date shifts each year with the winds

The rainy season is the time for fireflies. The firefly boats at Amphawa have the best chance roughly from May or June to October, especially on moonless nights, and sightings vary from one night to the next. No tour can promise them. Tours such as the Maeklong Railway & Amphawa Floating Market Day Trip include the firefly boat, so the boat trip goes ahead whether or not the fireflies are out.

The late rainy season, roughly September to November, carries a flood risk in the Mae Klong basin, where high tides and river discharges can push water into the markets. That happened in October 2026, when Damnoen Saduak, Amphawa and the Maeklong area were all affected and some vendors had to stop trading. If you are going in the autumn, check current conditions with your operator before you travel.

Holidays and Songkran

Songkran, the Thai New Year, runs from 13 to 15 April and is the busiest domestic travel period of the year. In 2026 it fell on Monday to Wednesday, which created a five-day break from 11 April. Expect busier roads out of Bangkok and busier markets, Amphawa above all, since it draws mainly Thai visitors. Book any tour well ahead for those dates and allow extra time on the road.

The early tour, and the train

The Bangkok: Maeklong Railway Market & Floating Market Boat Tour is built around the morning rhythm. It goes to Damnoen Saduak first, with a long-tail motorboat ride through the market and its side canals, then on to Maeklong for the railway market, and it includes a train ride through the market on every option except the 7:00 departure. That is the trade-off of the earliest slot: you reach the floating market sooner but watch the train instead of riding it. It starts from $12 per person for the shared tour from the Khao San meeting point (October 2026), with a 4.8 rating from 11,979 reviews and free cancellation. Food and drinks are extra, and guests mention big groups and a hot, crowded train. Our review sets out the options, and the floating market and railway market tours page compares the alternatives.
