Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market
Bang Nam Phueng floating market on Bang Kachao: weekend hours, the ferry from Wat Khlong Toei Nok pier, bike rental and what to expect on a DIY trip.
Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market is a small weekend and public-holiday market on Bang Kachao, the green river bend across the Chao Phraya from Khlong Toei that Bangkok calls its “Green Lung”. It opens roughly 8am to early afternoon on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and you reach it by a five-minute ferry from Wat Khlong Toei Nok pier, then a short ride by bicycle or motorbike taxi. No tour on this site goes there, so plan it as a do-it-yourself half day. If you want a booked morning on Bangkok’s canals with a guide and a boat, the local floating market tours are the closest match.

What Bang Nam Phueng is like
Bang Nam Phueng is a community market. It was set up by the Bang Nam Phueng Subdistrict Administrative Organization together with the villagers, in Phra Pradaeng district of Samut Prakan province, on the wooded loop of land the river wraps around. Most visitors are Thai families out for the weekend, and the draw is food, snacks and a slow wander along a canal, with the greenery of Bang Kachao all around.
Set your expectations the same way you would for Khlong Lat Mayom or Taling Chan: this is a local food market beside the water. Treat it as a weekend lunch outing with a bike ride attached. If boats crowded with produce are the picture in your head, that is the Damnoen Saduak style of market, covered in our Damnoen Saduak guide.
Bring cash. Small market stalls in and around Bangkok are often cash-only, and Bang Kachao is a place where you want small notes for ferries, bike rental and snacks.
Opening days and hours
The market runs on Saturday, Sunday and Thai public holidays. On weekdays you will find the island quiet and the market closed.
| Detail | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Days | Saturday, Sunday and public holidays |
| Hours | About 8:00 to 14:00; some guides say stalls stay until 16:00–17:00 |
| Best window | Mid-morning to lunchtime, while all the food stalls are trading |
| Entry | No ticket to buy for the market |
| Ferry across the river | About 5 minutes; roughly 10 baht on the small boats, 20 baht on larger ones |
| Bike rental | Roughly 50–100 baht per day near the piers and in the village |
| Location | Bang Kachao, Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan |
| Last checked | October 2026 |
The closing time is the soft part. One source puts it at 2pm and others at 4pm or 5pm, so plan to arrive by late morning and treat anything after lunch as a bonus. Ask a stallholder or the bike-rental shop when the market winds down that day.
How to get to Bang Nam Phueng floating market
The trip has three legs: get to Wat Khlong Toei Nok pier on the Bangkok side, cross the river, then cover the last stretch on Bang Kachao.
- To the pier. Wat Khlong Toei Nok is in Khlong Toei, on the east bank opposite Bang Kachao. A taxi or Grab is the simplest way to reach it; give the driver the temple name.
- Across the river. Small ferries cross from Wat Khlong Toei Nok pier to the Bang Kachao side in about five minutes. Fares are roughly 10 baht on the small boats and 20 baht on the bigger ones, so keep coins and small notes handy.
- To the market. Bicycles rent near the piers for about 50–100 baht a day, and most visitors ride. If you prefer not to cycle, motorbike taxis wait at the pier.
The ride to the market is part of the point, and once you have a bike for the day you can explore more of the island before or after lunch. Give yourself a full morning for the round trip and the market, and set off early on hot days.
There is no booking to make and no ticket to buy, which is the good news. The trade-off is that nobody meets you at the pier, explains what you are eating or sorts out a lost turn, so download an offline map before you go.
Bang Nam Phueng compared with other weekend markets
If you only have one weekend morning, it helps to know how Bang Nam Phueng sits next to Bangkok’s other local floating markets. All three in the table are weekend and holiday markets close to the city, and none of them is a boat-crammed tourist scene.
| Market | Days | Approximate hours | Getting there | Bookable tour on this site |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bang Nam Phueng | Sat, Sun, holidays | 8:00–14:00 (some say to 16:00–17:00) | Ferry from Wat Khlong Toei Nok, then bike | None; go independently |
| Khlong Lat Mayom | Sat, Sun, holidays | Roughly 8:00–17:00 (sources vary) | Taxi or Grab to Taling Chan district | Yes |
| Taling Chan | Sat, Sun, holidays | About 8:00–17:00 | Taxi, or bus 79 | Yes |
Bang Nam Phueng wins on greenery and the cycling. Khlong Lat Mayom has the bigger food spread, and its pier runs boat trips along the canals for about 60–100 baht per person. Taling Chan sits in front of the district office on Khlong Chak Phra, about 12 km from downtown, and is the easiest of the three by public bus. Khlong Lat Mayom and Taling Chan are about 4 km apart, so you can do both in one morning. Our Khlong Lat Mayom guide and Taling Chan guide cover them in detail.
The bookable alternative: a canal boat day
Since no operator on this site runs a Bang Nam Phueng tour, the nearest bookable experience is a day on the Thonburi canals on the other side of the river. The Full Day Longtail Boat Canal Tour to Bangkok Floating Market meets at BTS Wutthakat station and spends 6.5 hours in a teak longtail boat on the weekend canal network, with Khlong Lat Mayom floating market among the stops, plus an orchid and pandan farm, Wat Paknam and the riverside Artist House. It costs from $85 per person (October 2026), includes a local Thai lunch or snacks, water and soft drinks, a life jacket and the farm entrance ticket, and has free cancellation. It holds a 5.0 rating from 14 reviews, a small number, so read our review before you book. Hotel pickup by van costs extra (THB 1,500 for groups within central Bangkok).
If you would sooner be driven, the Khlong Lat Mayom & Taling Chan Local Floating Markets Tour is a 4-hour private outing with a guide and round-trip transfer, from $98 per person, rated 4.3 from 14 reviews. The Local Weekend Markets: Khlong Lat Mayom & Chatuchak Tour pairs the floating market with Or Tor Kor and Chatuchak over 8 hours, from $92 per person, including a boat ride at the floating market. All three only make sense on a weekend, when the markets trade.
