Boats and Prices
Floating Market Boat Rides, Explained
Paddle boat or long-tail, what a boat costs at the pier, and which tours already include one.
The simplest way to get a floating market boat ride from Bangkok is to book a tour that already includes it, because the boat is where Damnoen Saduak visitors most often overpay. Entry to the market is free; the boat is a paid service, and prices at the pier are set by each operator and often negotiated. Our pick, the Maeklong Railway Market & Floating Market Boat Tour by Monkey Travel, includes a long-tail motorboat ride through the canals around Damnoen Saduak, from $12 per person for the shared tour from Khao San, rated 4.8 from 11,979 reviews.
Paddle boat or long-tail motorboat?
The two boats feel quite different. A paddle (rowing) boat is slow and quiet. It weaves between the vendor boats at stall height, so you can buy fruit or noodles over the side, and it is the scene most photos show. A long-tail motorboat is loud and quick. It covers far more canal, including the residential stretches outside the market, but it spends less time among the stalls. Many one-hour rides combine the two: a long-tail run along the outer canals, then paddling through the market.
If you want the classic picture of boats packed with produce, choose a paddle boat. If you want to see canal-side houses and cover distance, choose a long-tail. The tours split along the same line.
What a boat costs at the pier
There is no market-wide price board at Damnoen Saduak. Each pier or operator sets its own rate, and quotes vary widely. Here are the figures we found, all in baht:
| Quote | Boat | Price | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Posted rates at one pier (undated) | Rowing boat, about 1 hour | 300–400 | Unclear whether per person or per boat |
| Posted rates at one pier (undated) | Long-tail, about 1 hour, 6–8 passengers | 600 | Unclear |
| One operator’s advance-booking rates (October 2026) | Paddle boat, 30 min / 1 hour | 400 / 500 | Per boat, 1–5 people |
| One operator’s advance-booking rates (October 2026) | Motorboat, 1 hour | 850 | Per boat, up to 6 |
| Typical shared seat | Shared boat, about 1 hour | About 400 | Per person |
| Typical private hire | Private boat seating 6 | About 2,000 | Per boat |
| Recent walk-up quotes from visitors | Private boat, 1 hour | 2,500–4,000 | Per boat |
Two rules cover most of it. First, agree the price, the duration and whether it is per person or per boat before you board. A price that sounds fair per boat is steep per person. Second, bargaining over boat hire is normal here, unlike food and souvenirs, which are generally fixed within a few baht.
The 2,000-baht drop-off
The best-known trick runs like this: a driver drops you about 1 km short of the market, at a pier where you are told a boat is the only way in, and quoted about 2,000 baht per person. You can walk. Buses and minivans from Bangkok also stop about 1 km out, and the last stretch is a walk, a motorbike taxi or a songthaew. If you do want a boat at that point, the per-boat rates above are your benchmark. This is a good reason to have the boat inside your tour price, or booked in advance.

Prices checked in October 2026. Monkey Travel’s long-tail is not suitable for guests over 100 kg or taller than 185 cm, who need a separate boat at 250 baht extra. Its $12 shared tour also comes with a choice to make: the 07:00 departure does not include the train ride into the Maeklong Railway Market. Shared groups go up to 42, and some guests find the free time short. Read our review for the detail. For the train question across all tours, see floating market and railway market tours.
Hiring a boat on your own
If you travel to Damnoen Saduak independently, you can book the boat ahead and skip the pier negotiation. The Boat Tour of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market by TTWU is priced per boat, not per person: from $45 for a 60-minute rowboat for up to 5 people, with 60- and 90-minute motorboat options at a higher price. There is no guide and no transport, so you get yourself to the market, and the operator sends directions by WhatsApp or iMessage. It is rated 4.4 from 31 reviews, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. See our review and our guide to how to get to Damnoen Saduak.
Damnoen Saduak and the Mae Klong basin canals were hit by floods in October 2026, so check current conditions with your operator before you travel.
Canal boats closer to Bangkok
You do not have to drive 1.5–2 hours to ride a long-tail. Bangkok’s own canals have boat trips too; our guide to Bangkok canal and long-tail boat tours compares them. The Full Day Longtail Boat Canal Tour to Bangkok Floating Market by Pandan Tour leaves from near BTS Wutthakat in a teak long-tail, with groups of up to 6, and visits the weekend floating market at Khlong Lat Mayom, an orchid and pandan farm, Wat Paknam and the Artist House. Lunch or snacks, drinks and the farm entry are included, from $85 per person, rated 5.0 from 14 reviews. Van pickup costs extra, and shorts and sleeveless tops are not allowed. See our review.
At Khlong Lat Mayom, weekend boat rides leave from the pier across the street for about 60–100 baht per person. At Taling Chan, boat tours from the pier have been reported at under 100 baht per person. Our local floating market tours page covers both. At Amphawa, evening boats go looking for fireflies along the canals, best in the rainy months and never guaranteed; see Amphawa floating market tours. For every market cost in one place, read floating market prices.

"Our guide Jeed was very nice. He gave us suggestions, explained several things about Thailand at the beginning of the trip and gave us enough time to do everything. The markets are small so 1 hour per market is enough. Thank you for this experience!"

Check Availability & BookFloating Market Boat Ride FAQ
Boat prices, per person vs per boat, paddle vs long-tail, and how to avoid overpaying at Damnoen Saduak.
There is no fixed price. One operator's advance rates in October 2026 were 400 baht for 30 minutes or 500 baht for an hour in a paddle boat for 1–5 people, and 850 baht for an hour in a motorboat for up to 6. Walk-up private boats are often quoted 2,000–4,000 baht. Agree the price, duration and basis before boarding. See floating market prices.
A seat on a shared boat is usually about 400 baht per person for roughly an hour. Most other quotes are per boat, so the per-person cost depends on how many of you share it: a 500-baht paddle boat for five works out at 100 baht each. Always ask whether a price is per person or per boat, because the same figure means very different totals.
No. Entry to Damnoen Saduak floating market is free. The boat is a paid service, not an admission ticket, so you only pay if you take a boat, and you can walk the lanes beside the canal without one. Tours that include a boat ride cover it in the ticket price, which is the easiest way to avoid negotiating at the pier.
The market is real, but the boat sale can be a trap. A commonly reported tactic is to drop visitors about 1 km away and say a boat is required, at about 2,000 baht per person. You can walk the last stretch. Agree any boat price in advance, or book a tour with the boat included. Our Damnoen Saduak tours page lists which ones do.
A paddle boat is slow and quiet and moves between the vendor boats at stall height, so you can buy food over the side. A long-tail motorboat is louder and faster and covers more canal, including residential stretches, with less time among the stalls. Many one-hour rides combine both. Bigcountry's tours use paddle boats; TRIPZA and Monkey Travel use long-tails.
Most Damnoen Saduak tours do. Monkey Travel (from $12) and TRIPZA (from $15) include a long-tail motorboat; Bigcountry's combo (from $24) includes a paddle boat. The private Bigcountry tour includes a paddle boat, with a long-tail inside the market at about 150 baht extra. Quality Thai Guide's private excursion includes a 20–30 minute private long-tail ride.
Yes. TTWU's Boat Tour of Damnoen Saduak Floating Market sells only the boat, from $45 per boat for up to 5 people for a 60-minute rowboat, with longer motorboat options at a higher price. There is no guide or transport, so you reach the market yourself. Our guide to visiting without a tour covers buses, minivans and drivers.
Much less than at Damnoen Saduak. At Khlong Lat Mayom, weekend boat rides leave from the pier across the street for about 60–100 baht per person and stop at places such as a temple or orchid farm. At Taling Chan, pier boat tours have been reported at under 100 baht per person. Both markets open at weekends and on public holidays. See local floating market tours.
Yes. In the evenings at Amphawa, boats run along the canals and river to look for fireflies, reported at about 60–80 baht per person on a shared boat or around 600 baht for a private one. Fireflies are best in the rainy months and never guaranteed. Amphawa opens Friday to Sunday only. Our Amphawa tours page compares the options.
Some tours set them. Monkey Travel says its long-tail ride is not suitable for guests over 100 kg or taller than 185 cm, who need a separate boat at 250 baht extra. TRIPZA's tour is not suitable for people over 120 kg. Most Damnoen tours also list themselves as unsuitable for people with mobility impairments, so check the listing before you book.
